Malaysia has a lot going for it in the world of perfume. We have agarwood from our own rainforests, pandan, tropical spices, and a mix of cultures that no other country can replicate.
And quietly, over the past decade, a group of local perfumers have been doing something genuinely exciting with all of that.
Most people still default to international brands like Chanel or Dior when they want a good perfume.
That’s fine. But if you have never tried a Malaysian-made fragrance, you are missing out on something that smells like home in the best way possible. Here are seven local brands worth knowing about.
Website: riranaparfume.my
Founded in 2017, Rirana Parfume holds the title of being the first handcrafted niche fragrance house in Malaysia.
Every scent is made from natural oils, formulated to react to your skin and develop throughout the day. Their range includes Cherry On Top, Black Wood, Coconut Mangga, and Herb & Wood, all gender-free, cruelty-free, and free from parabens and phthalates.
They have also caught the attention of the international fragrance community and have been featured on platforms like Fragrantica and Scent Split, which is not easy for a homegrown Malaysian brand to pull off.
Website: malayperfumery.com
Malay Perfumery was created by Fazzillah Noordin, who grew up in her grandmother’s village in Rembau surrounded by pandan, lime, rose syrup, and vanilla.
Those childhood memories became the foundation of every bottle. The brand combines the heritage of the Malay Archipelago with French perfumery techniques, and the result is something that feels both culturally rooted and beautifully made.
Their fragrance Fleur de Rampai, inspired by the bunga rampai tradition at Malay weddings, carries notes of pandan, jasmine, and patchouli. One reviewer described it as smelling like nasi lemak in the best way possible. If you have ever wanted to wear a piece of Malaysian culture, this is it.
Website: szindore.com
Szindore was founded by Yaseer Namiz, a chemist who spent years researching perfumery across Switzerland, Indonesia, and Singapore before launching the brand.
They are best known for their inspired-by formulations, taking the DNA of popular high-end fragrances and building their own premium versions.
Their Conquer draws from Dior Sauvage, and their Valencia Donna is inspired by Valentino Donna, but the longevity and sillage are consistently praised by reviewers who have tested them side by side with the originals.
On TikTok, fragrance creators regularly name Szindore as one of the only local brands they genuinely trust. They also have physical stores across Malaysia now, so you can smell everything before you commit.
Website: joshleefragrances.com
Josh Lee is Malaysia’s first certified perfumer, trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, France, the most respected perfumery school in the world. His tagline is “Heritage through Scent” and every bottle lives up to it.
His first fragrance, George Town, was launched in 2012 as the world’s first heritage city fragrance, inspired by the UNESCO listing of George Town as a World Heritage Site.
His Nyonya fragrance, inspired by Peranakan culture, was praised internationally for being light and elegant. All his perfumes are HALAL-certified by JAKIM and carry IFRA certification.
With Josh Lee, you are not just buying a perfume. You are buying a piece of Malaysian history.
Website: lovemaya.co
Love Maya sits at the intersection of fragrance and body care, built around the idea that every bottle should capture a feeling, specifically nostalgic scents and skin-loving ingredients crafted for a journey of self-discovery.
The brand has built a real community around it, not just a customer base. Their ambassador Coco helped shape the brand from day one through live sessions, scent rituals, and story-filled launches.
Their products are available on their website and at Watsons Malaysia, which makes them easy to find and try without committing to a full bottle upfront.
Website: auphorie.com
Auphorie is the most internationally recognised name on this list. Founded in 2015 by brothers Eugene and Emrys Au, they are entirely self-taught, learning perfumery through books and research.
Their fragrance Miyako won the Art and Olfaction Award in the Artisan Category in 2016, which is one of the most respected independent awards in the global fragrance world. It opens with peach, apricot, and yuzu before settling into Japanese osmanthus and precious woods.
Their Eau De Nyonya captures the essence of Nyonya kuih through coconut milk, pandan, rice, dark chocolate, jasmine, and oud.
Everything is handcrafted in small batches in Malaysia, and they ship worldwide. For a brand built from scratch with zero formal training, what Auphorie has achieved is genuinely remarkable.
Website: bahfamsn.com
Bahfamsn comes from North Borneo, founded by Sonali Said and Kriss Mokhtar.
Every perfume is handcrafted in small batches using natural ingredients with a focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing, which matters a lot when the inspiration comes from a place as ecologically precious as Sabah and Sarawak.
This is a brand that represents a part of Malaysia most local fragrance houses overlook entirely. If you want something rare, deeply rooted, and consciously made, Bahfamsn is worth seeking out.
Most foreign perfumes are built for colder climates, designed to project in dry air on skin that does not sweat as much.
In Malaysia, the heat and humidity change how a fragrance behaves. Local brands understand that. And when they reach for inspiration, they reach for things that’s from here: pandan, agarwood, rampai flowers, Peranakan culture, George Town streets, Borneo forests.
And that is why local perfume brands are worth trying.
